Thieves Punished - 8/16/2002

Jeffery Charles Miller

In the early morning hours of August 20, 1994 my facility was burglarized. Taken was my entire colony of albino ball pythons, heterozygous animals and eggs. The Oklahoma City Police Department recovered fingerprints that were later identified to be those of William John Buchholz of Evergreen, CO. A warrant was issued for his arrest

Buchholz was taken into custody on unrelated charges in January of 2000 in Colorado after returning to the United States from Mexico. He was extradited to Oklahoma to face the burglary charges February 14, 2000. He was convicted and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.

According to Buchholz he was hired by Jeffery Charles Miller to steal the snakes. Buchholz and his accomplice, Troy Winters, unlawfully entered the facility took the animals and delivered them to Miller. Information given by Buchholz was used to pursue a civil suit in Oklahoma County District Court. The Statute of Limitations would not allow criminal charges to be filed against Miller.

On September 12, 2000. Oklahoma County District Judge Noma Gurich awarded actual damages in the suit in the amount of $822,000 and punitive damages in the amount of $1,644,000. The total amount awarded by the court is $2,466,000. Efforts are currently underway to collect.

The whereabouts of the stolen animals is unknown with the exception of two albino ball pythons sold to a reptile dealer in New Hampshire and a cage manufacturer in California. Miller claims that all animals he was keeping were stolen from his home in October of 1998 shortly after the fingerprints from the Oklahoma burglary were identified as those of Buchholz and this information was made public.

Miller was indicted by the United States Court for the Northern District of California in January of 2000 on charges of smuggling wildlife and conspiracy. A court date is pending. Miller currently lives in Mesa, AZ with his common law wife and two children.
